At a time when fans are eagerly waiting for the next chapter in Ethan Hunt’s story with Mission: Impossible 8, the film has met with an unexpected roadblock, leading to yet another delay. Makers met with a malfunction on the film sets while shooting with a £23 million (approx Rs 250 Crore) submarine. According to various media reports, the equipment used to lower the 120-foot-high structure suddenly jammed under its weight and ended up being damaged. It is presently being repaired, thus putting the film’s shoot back weeks along with bumped-up costs.
A close source to the development told the Mirror, “They’re (makers) not happy as it puts production behind, which costs a lot of money per day.”
Speaking about the submarine in question, the last MI film had an explosion scene where the watercraft sank. This time, the sequel will revisit the submarine 10 years later. However, the filming was hit with production problems once they started adding the fittings and stairwells to the subshell, only to realise that it could not tolerate the weight. Sources known to the portal say that the repairs are ongoing.
Notably, while the franchise’s seventh film, Dead Reckoning Part One, came out last year, production on the second instalment has been facing multiple delays. Earlier, it was due to the Hollywood strikes, which pushed the original 2024 summer release to May 2025, and now, with these delays, it still remains uncertain when it will premiere.
Details About Mission: Impossible 8
Setting the stage for the events after the last film, Mission: Impossible 8 will showcase Tom Cruise’s IMF agent Ethan Hunt’s continued search for the rogue AI, The Entity while governments and other foreign parties will try to stop him. Besides that, he will also be seen seeking revenge against Gabriel.
According to reports, the film will aim to conclude Ethan’s Mission with old friends and new enemies, thus titling Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part Two. However, a confirmed title is yet to be revealed.
Besides Cruise Elliot, veteran stars like Hayley Atwell, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, and Rebecca Ferguson will return to their original characters alongside new faces. Actors like Nick Offerman, Holt McCallany, Hannah Waddingham, Janet McTeer, Lucy Tulugarjuk, and others have joined the upcoming instalment.
Much of Mission: Impossible 8 has been filmed, especially major parts in the UK at Longcross Studios before the Hollywood strike. The filming resumed recently in late March 2024, with new pictures emerging online.
