Known for bringing the blockbuster Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame to life, the Russo Brothers are said to be in talks to direct the next two films in the celebrated franchise. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Joe and Anthony Russo have been tapped to bring them into the fold at Marvel Studios on various fronts. Their first big priorities are said to be the upcoming sequels, i.e., Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars.
If confirmed, this will finally end the studio’s months-long, high-stakes search for filmmakers to oversee the film. Multiple names, including the likes of Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy, were popped during this time. While discussions are currently in the early stages, Marvel is yet to make a confirmed statement, the outlet reported.
It is pertinent to note that the director duo has previously helmed four of Marvel’s biggest and best-regarded films, including Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019). Combined, their films earned $6.681 billion, with Endgame alone standing as the No. 2 film of all time globally with a collection of $2.79 billion. Since then, they have ventured into other territories, giving out hits like The Gray Man and even producing award-winning titles like Everything Everywhere All at Once.
The Russo Brothers have also directed Netflix’s upcoming sci-fi adventure, The Electric State featuring Chris Pratt.

Previously titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, the fifth film might see over 60 MCU characters reprising their roles, such as Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson, reported Deadline. Actor Jonathan Majors was earlier roped in to play the lead villain but was later dropped following claims of assault and harassment.
On the other hand, Avengers: Secret Wars is likely to adopt both Marvel Comics events, with the 2015–16 story arc in focus for the crossover film. According to CBR, Marvel Studios has already begun work to set up Secret Wars with films like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
While Avengers 5 will hit theatres in 2026, Secret Wars is set for 2027.
