Chennai: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) MLA from RK Nagar P Vetrivel resigned on Sunday ahead of the Legislature Party meeting on May 22 called by party supremo and former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa.
Speaker P Dhanapal accepted the resignation and also declared the seat vacant. A notification to this effect has been issued by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Secretary.
Vetrivel's resignation comes less than a week after Jayalalithaa was acquitted by the Karnataka High Court in the disproportionate assets case. The resignation has led to speculation that he is leaving his RK Nagar seat for Jayalalithaa to contest. She is expected to be sworn in as the chief minister later this week.
The meeting on May 22 will be held at party headquarters in Chennai at 7 AM, the 67-year-old Jayalalithaa said. "All MLAs should participate in the meeting without fail," she said in a brief press release.
Decks were cleared for Jayalalithaa's return as Tamil Nadu chief minister after the Karnataka High Court on May 11 acquitted her in the 19-year-old disproportionate assets case.
The court set aside her conviction by the trial court and the four-year jail sentence awarded to her and three others, which led to her automatic disqualification as MLA and exit as hief minister in September 2014.
Senior party leader O Panneerselvam had assumed charge as stop-gap Chief Minister after being hand picked by Jayalalithaa to succeed her.
