New Delhi: Union Minister Shashi Tharoor has reportedly defended police action against 111 people for posting and sharing 'defamatory' remarks against Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien in the Suryanelli gangrape case. The Cyber cell of the Kerala Police had filed cases against the Internet users, based on a complaint filed by Kerala Mahila Congress leader Bindu Krishna, who alleged that many of the comments also targeted her.
Tharoor defended the action saying it was a clear case of defamation against Kurien. Kurien, although not accused in the case, was recently named by the Suryanelli rape survivor in a police complaint. However, no FIR has been filed against him yet.
When contacted, Bindu Krishna said she had submitted the complaint to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who forwarded it to the Cyber cell for investigation. Krishna said the comments that appeared in the social media were "highly defamatory" with a view to "tarnishing" her image as a woman for backing Kurien. She said that she was only maintaining the party stand on the Kurien issue.
The comments were noticed on February 4 and by then itself more 140 people were found to have shared them, she said.
