Chandigarh: BJP on Thursday questioned the "silence" of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and party general secretary Rahul Gandhi over the police action against yoga guru Ramdev and his supporters at Ramlila Maidan.
"While they were active when it came to Bhatta Parsaul agitation (by farmers), they have not spoken even one word on the (Ramdev) issue," BJP general secretary JP Nadda, who is also a party spokesperson, told reporters here.
"Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi raised the matter of police atrocities on farmers in Bhatta-Parsaul, but have not shown similar zeal and enthusiasm in condemning the police brutalities on hapless citizens at Ramlila Maidan. This shows their political expediency and exposes their commitment to securing the rights of the common people," he alleged.
Nadda also said there is a "divergence of opinion within the government about adopting a political or policing approach with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee initiating the dialogue approach, while Home Minister P Chidambaram and HRD Minister Kapil Sibal advocating a more stringent and hawkish policing
approach."
Asked if people like Baba Ramdev and Gandhian Anna Hazare had occupied "political space", he said "We have been fighting a relentless campaign against corruption and black money. We raised the issue of inflation and other issues concerning the common masses."
