Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday asserted that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government had the political will to ensure women's safety in the national capital. He announced the government would form a Group of Ministers (GoM) on women security, which would be chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.
Talking about the issues that the GoM would look into, the Chief Minister said that the panel would look into possibility if proceedings in rape cases can take place in a time-bound manner. He said that the GoM would also prepare a list of rape cases currently pending in different courts across the Capital.
Addressing a press conference on the issue, Kejriwal said that the GoM will examine whether to stipulate death penalty or life term in cases of rapes involving minors, adding, "The GoM will also examine lowering the cut off age for juveniles involved in heinous crimes."
The Chief Minister further said that the GoM will work to expedite proceedings in cases of crime against women. He said that the government would also talk to the Chief Justice and convey that it's willing to incur expenses if required for infrastructure development to fast track the cases.
According to Kejriwal, the GoM will also explore the option of setting up separate police stations for victims of crimes against women, if they do not get help at local police stations.
"We will also ask the forensic labs to fast track proceedings in rape cases," he said.
Hitting out at the Delhi Police, the Chief Minister said that "there's no sense of security in Delhi". He said that nothing was wrong with the mindset of those in the national capital, but the anti-social elements have a belief that they can get away even after committing heinous crimes.
