Aligarh: The ongoing farmers' protest in western Uttar Pradesh demanding higher compensation for the land acquired by the government has taken a political turn with leaders of various political parties extending their support to the protesters.
On Saturday, 2 farmers were allegedly killed in police firing in Mathura when the police tried to arrest their leader Ram Babu. One policeman has also been killed. The protests have now intensified with thousands of protesters gathering at Tappal village in Aligarh.
On Monday, leaders of opposition parties in the state including Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Ajit Singh and BJP leader Rajnath Singh visited the affected area and extended their support to the protesters.
Samajwadi Party and RLD on Monday demanded dismissal of the Mayawati government in the wake of the police firing on agitating farmers.
"There is only one solution of this problem....dismiss this (Mayawati) government," SP President Mulayam Singh Yadav told reporters after both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned for the day following uproar over the issue.
RLD MP Jayant Chaudhary too demanded dismissal of the BSP government in Uttar Pradesh.
"The blame lies squarely on the administration," he said adding that though farmers are giving their land for development, it was not being used for that purpose.
The BJP on the other hand has constituted an inquiry committee to look into the entire issue and accused the Uttar Pradesh government of benefiting a particular industrial house.
On Sunday, Chief Minister Mayawati transferred Senior Superintendent of Police of Mathura and of Aligarh following the violence. She has announced compensation for the families of the victims and ordered a Judicial Inquiry into the matter. She has also promised an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 5 lakh.
