New Delhi: Less than 24 hours before a crucial UPA-Left meeting on the Indo-US nuclear deal, the Congress seems to have blinked in the face-off with the communist ally.
In a clear softening of stand, CNN-IBN learns the UPA is unwilling to risk early elections and will not force the Prime Minister's agenda on the nuclear deal in the crucial meet with the Left parties on Wednesday.
Since the Left has clearly said it will pull out support to the Government if it goes ahead with the deal, sources say the Congress is likely to push for time by proposing more meetings over the issue.
While a request will be made to go to IAEA, the Government will not press the issue and seems to be willing to give Left more time to think about its stand on the deal.
The mood in the top corridors of power is that of deferral and not confrontation, say the sources.
While the PMO says it’s still hopeful that the nuclear deal will go through in July sometime, Government will not risk an early election only on the basis of the deal.
While PM’s prestige – which has come under clout for buckling under Left arm-twisting - is at risk, sources say there is a willingness in the Government to shift the focus to the more immediate concerns like economic slowdown and price rise.
In any case, India will find it difficult to meet the July deadline set by the US when their Congress meets.
Therefore, the Government is hoping that buying time till Septmeber would be a good idea since the economic situation will have eased out and a good monsoon will have ensured an easing of inflationary trends.
