New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Maneka Gandhi has blamed Uttar Pradesh government for detaining her son Varun Gandhi under the National Security Act (NSA) saying the way in which he was taken to jail was illegal.
"The way in which Varun has been taken to Etah jail is illegal. It's a conspiracy against Varun," said Maneka
Maneka also alleged that the Congress and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in Uttar Pradesh conspired to have NSA slapped on Varun.
She visited Varun at Etah jail on Wednesday where he was moved on Tuesday night following reports that underworld don Chhota Shakeel had planned to kill the BJP candidate from Pilibhit on Saturday when he going to surrender at a Pilibhit court.
Varun was earlier lodged in a prison in Pilibhit after his surrender on Saturday.
The NSA was invoked by the Mayawati government against Varun Gandhi on Sunday night for his alleged hate speeches and mob violence during his arrest on Saturday.
Anyone booked under NSA cannot get bail for at least six months and the time frame could extend up to one year.
The decision to move Varun to Etah jail was reportedly taken after the Intelligence Bureau (IB) unearthed a plot to kill him.
According to reports, the IB intercepted orders by Chhota Shakeel for the elimination of the BJP candidate from Pilibhit.
Shakeel reportedly sent for his key shooter for this special assignment.
As a result of IB's tip-off, the state home department ordered more than a dozen policemen - headed by a DSP and two Sub Inspectors - to surround Varun's vehicle as soon as it left Delhi for Pilibhit on March 28.
