New Delhi: The Home Ministry on Tuesday made it clear it will not entertain the Peoples Democratic Party's demand that remains of 2003 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru be returned to Kashmir. The remarks came a day after the PDP formed the government in Jammu and Kashmir in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Sources in the MHA said that Guru's remains could not be handed over as he was buried in an unmarked grave inside Tihar Jail. The MLA who made the demand is yet to make a written request.
Rajya Sabha MP Javed Akhtar hit out at PDP and said the party has no right to make such a demand. "What right does PDP have to demand Afzal Guru's remains? Only Afzal Guru's family has the right to his remains," Akhtar said.
Congress MP Veerappa Moily backed Akhtar saying, "This demand is totally inappropriate. PDP is moving towards extremism. J&K has to abide by Indian Constitution."
Eight PDP MLAs had issued a statement on Monday supporting independent MLA Engineer Rashid's earlier resolution. The statement was signed by Mohammad Khalil Bandh, Zahoor Ahmed Mir, Raja Manzoor Ahmad, Mohd Abas Wani, Yawar Dilawar Mir, Advocate Mohd Yosuf, Aijaz Ahmad Mir and Noor Mohd Sheikh.
"PDP stands by the demand for return of his (Guru's) mortal remains, and the party promises to follow vigorously for the return of the mortal remains," the PDP statement said.
Guru was hanged on February 9, 2013 inside Tihar Jail.
