On what’s dubbed the most depressing day of the year in the UK, Made in Chelsea star Sam Thompson has brought smiles to the faces of many by clinching the Guinness World Record (GWR) for the most hugs given in 60 seconds. The charming star of the popular structured-reality series, according to the Guinness World Record website, embarked on this endeavour during Monday’s (January 15) episode of This Morning, taking to the streets of Shoreham-by-Sea in a bid to spread joy amidst the gloom.
Yahoo News reports that Thompson, accompanied by adjudicator Joanne Brent, ventured into the community to accomplish this feat on ‘Blue Monday,’ a day associated with a heightened sense of melancholy. Participants, drawn from the local populace of Shoreham-by-Sea, eagerly embraced Thompson’s endeavour, perhaps seeking a reprieve from the town’s reputation as the “saddest town in the UK,” as highlighted by the Office of National Statistics.
The attempt was not without its challenges. Joanne Brent emphasised the importance of adhering to strict guidelines, urging Thompson to ensure that each hug made contact with the torso of the recipient, failing which the hug would not be counted, Yahoo News added.
“Make contact with everyone’s torso — if not, the hug will not count — and give them an embrace. That’s about it, speed is your friend here!,” she stated.
Despite the pressure, Thompson’s practice rounds impressed the adjudicator, who expressed confidence in his ability to secure the coveted record.
The path to success was not free from obstacles and challenges. The news outlet reported that Thompson’s initial attempt fell short due to a technical error, prompting a second try. He, however, persisted, and his perseverance paid off. The results revealed that Thompson had successfully hugged 88 individuals in total, surpassing the former record by just one hug.
This triumph adds yet another feather to Thompson’s cap. His earlier stint on I’m a Celebrity in 2023 endeared him to fans even more, as they witnessed his camaraderie with fellow contestants and emotional reunions with close friends. Thompson’s victory in the jungle, where he claimed the title of King of the Jungle, remains a fond memory for his supporters.
