‘ChatGPT Is Like Taylor Swift To Your Grandfather’: Paytm CEO Compares AI Tools

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has come a long way from Alan Turing’s early works to today’s transformers. In recent years, significant progress has been made in the field of generative AI, which has transformed the ability of machines to interface with and understand humans. OpenAI’s GPT is spearheading this dramatic shift.

However, a recently held social media debate saw ChatGPT go head to head with another AI tool called Perplexity, sparking a conflict on which is smarter. The CEO and founder of Paytm Vijay Shekhar Sharma shared his perspective and came up with an illustration.

Aravind Srinivas, the CEO and founder of Perplexity AI, started the conversation and asserted that Perplexity AI is far smarter than ChatGPT in response to a user’s query.

Using identical queries, Srinivas tested the two AI chatbots. He posed the query to Perplexity and ChatGPT (in its free edition): “What has triggered X being restricted in Brazil?”

ChatGPT responded by mentioning Brazil’s wider regulatory measures against hate speech and disinformation, especially during election seasons. However, Perplexity AI responded more accurately and described how X disobeyed Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes’ legal order, leading to the ban’s implementation.

Sharma agreed, comparing the ChatGPT experience to an interaction between Taylor Swift and someone similar to Bono and Roger Waters. “ChatGPT is like talking Taylor Swift to your grandfather who is from the Bono and Roger Waters era. Perplexity is perpetually intelligent. Then and now,” he said.

Sharma said in comparison to ChatGPT, Perplexity AI offers a more thorough and up-to-date grasp of ongoing events. He stated that ChatGPT has significant limitations. The dataset it was dependent on was only updated till a specific date. As a result, it can’t comprehend and provide information on current occurrences.

A user asked, “The difference between answers from AI raises the question Who is correct? Who to trust?”

Another user stated, “Not Taylor Swift catching strays. Why is she getting dragged into the discussion?”

In August 2022, a group of experienced professionals led by Aravind Srinivas, Denis Yarats, Johnny Ho, and Andy Konwinski created Perplexity AI. Perplexity AI was founded in August 2022, only a few months ahead of OpenAI.
