Former US president Donald Trump told Fox News in an interview that he is “OK” with serving potential jail time or being under house arrest days after his conviction on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records – marking the first time a former US president was found guilty of a felony.
“I’m OK with it. I saw one of my lawyers the other day on television saying, ‘Oh no, you don’t want to do that to the president’. I said: You don’t beg for anything,” Trump was quoted as saying by the US-based broadcaster.
“I don’t think the public would stand it. I’m not sure the public would stand for it,” Trump said, warning of a ‘breaking point’.
“I think it would be tough for the public to take, you know, at a certain point, there’s a breaking point,” he added. The remarks came days after a Manhattan jury found Trump guilty of all charges in his hush money trial.
The warning has resonated in a country already concerned about the prospect of political violence in the increasingly heated run-up to the November 5 presidential election.
This made Trump the first major-party presidential nominee to be convicted of a crime in the midst of a presidential campaign. Judge Juan Merchan will announce Trump’s sentence on July 11.
Merchan could also sentence the Republican to probation or up to 4 years in state prison on each count, with a maximum of 20 years.
Trump has denied all the charges and said ‘sick’ people were involved in getting him convicted.
“I’m fighting for the Constitution,” Trump said. He also said that the trial impacted his family. “She’s fine, but I think it’s very hard for her. I mean, she’s fine. But it’s … you know, she has to read all this crap,” Trump said, speaking of his wife Melania Trump.
“These people are so evil, and at the same time the country can come together,” he added.
