Pakistan: Militants Kill 10 In Attack on Police Station in Khyber's Dera Ismail Khan
Militants attack northern Pakistan police station, killing 10 officers. Counteroffensive underway, updates on search operation

More than 30 militants attacked a police station in northern Pakistan early Monday killing at least 10 officers, a senior commander said.

Terrorists launched an attack from three directions on the Chaudhwan police station in Dera Ismail Khan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The attack occurred early morning in Tehsil Daraban.

There was an exchange of fire for over two and a half hours, Khyber chief Akhtar Hayat Gandapur told news agency AFP. The assailants targeted the police station using heavy weapons, including grenades and intense gunfire from all directions.

He said 10 officers were killed and four wounded in the attack on Chaudhwan police station in Dera Ismail Khan district. Gandapur said that the militants briefly seized control of the police station during the Monday morning assault, which started around 1:30 am.

In response, the police engaged in a counteroffensive, but the terrorists managed to escape under the cover of darkness. The injured personnel were promptly transported to the district hospital. Pakistan agencies have established a cordon around the area and initiated a search operation to apprehend the fleeing militants.

The border regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province have for years been a hotbed of militancy, with both Pakistan Taliban and Islamic State fighters attacking government and security targets.
