Karnataka Fisherman Discovers Rare Stone-like Crab Fossil
These crabs are mostly found on the seabed, but this is the first time it has been found in a river.

A fossil has been discovered recently by a fisherman in Uttara Kannada, Karnataka. A man named Ishwar Harikanth went fishing at the Aghnashini River recently. There, he found something which looked like a stone, but it turned out to be the fossil of a crab. He then took the fossil to the head of the fisheries association, Vinayak Harikanth of Baithakol Karwar. According to their traditions, finding a fossil is considered a miracle, which happens after or before the full moon.

Researcher VN Naik said in an interview, “This is the first time they have been found in freshwater.” If the fossil happens to be hundreds of years old, then it can be confirmed by carbon dating, and it will provide an idea of its lifespan. These crabs are mostly found on the seabed, but this is the first time it has been found in a river.

Ishwar Harikanth claimed that the body of a crab gets destroyed in four days. Thus, finding a stone-like crab fossil was a huge surprise to him and other fishermen. The video taken by the News18 team shows the mummified crab, which can be mistaken as a stone.

Earlier in August, reports surfaced that a fossil of an extinct crab had been discovered in Tokyo, Japan. The fossil was discovered in the walls of Tokyo Station. According to reports, the fossil seemed to be that of a crab ancestor, which went extinct around 30 million years ago.

Similarly, a palaeontologist from New Zealand claimed to have found a 12-million-year-old crab fossil. He found it at a beach in Christchurch. Reportedly, the fossil was trapped in a grey stone, which was removed to get it out. The discoverer of the fossil goes by the name Morne. He frequently shares his findings on the YouTube channel Mamlambo Fossils. The video was shared on April 6, 2020, and since then it has gained more than a million views on the platform. He said, “I found a fossil crab on a beach in New Zealand and then used an air scribe to remove the rock to show the fossil crab.” He added that it took him around 10 hours to remove it.
