Kolkata (West Bengal): The Special Economic Zone (SEZ) fire refuses to die down in West Bengal.
After the upheavals in Singur and Nandigram in which some innocent civillians and one policeman lost their lives, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has, in an effort to placate farmers, announced that his government was committed to both agriculture and industrial development.
"We have to accelerate the progress of West Bengal in agriculture and industry and put the state in the top position in science, education and culture, but not without ensuring proper rehabilitation of the people," he was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.
He has promised that the people who will be displaced due to townships and SEZs will be properly rehabilitated by the state government.
Bhattacharjee has been facing flak from the opposition Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Bannerjee who is demanding that the government return land it acquired 'forceably from farmers' for the Tata Motors plant in Singur and for the proposed SEZ in Nandigram.
