New Delhi: Armed Naxalites in Andhra Pradesh attacked the Doordarshan centre in Chintapali at Visakhapatnam early on Thursday morning.

The CPI (Maoist) rebels also blasted an electricity sub-station in Chintapalli Mandal of agency area of the District leading to a blackout in several villages in Chintapalli, G K Veedhi and Koyar Mandals.

They also blew up an ex MLA's house in the city and damaged the Roads and Building department building in Chintappali.

Special greyhound police teams were deployed in all agency police stations, particularly in border areas immediately after the attack.

However, Superintendent of Police (Vishakhapatnam) Atul Sabharwal told CNN-IBN that the report of DD office being attacked was wrong and that it was only the transmission centre that had been attacked.

Sabharwal said situation was “under control.”

News agency PTI reports Maoists were reportedly protesting against the proposed bauxite mining project and some encounters in which prominent Naxals were killed.

Security was tightened in all Maoist-infested North Coastal districts with night patrolling and vehicle check intensified in the agency areas.

Senior police officials were monitoring the situation and combing operations underway to trace the culprits.
