BANGALORE: Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda has assured the representatives of Bijapur and Bagalkot districts and MLAs and MPs to give priority to implement the scheme III of the Upper Krishna Project and utilise 130.90 tmc of water allocated by the Krishna Water Dispute Tribunal-II headed by the Justice Brijeshkumar in the scheme-B.In a meeting attended by Water Resources Minister Basavaraj Bommai, Kannada and Culture Minister Govinda Karajol, Industries Minister Murugesh Nirani and senior officials of the state government, it was said that the state government has estimated to spend about Rs 17,800 crore to utilise the said amount.Briefing media persons after the meeting, Bommai informed that the cost of the rehabilitation and resettlement and land acquisition for the project may go up once the Union government comes out with the new policy in the coming sessions of the Parliament.He said that about 76,000 hectares would be submerged, 22 villages have to be shifted and over 1.50 lakh people may be displaced to bring 5.3 lakh hectares of land under irrigation.Stating that both MLAs and MPs who have attended Thursday’s meeting have urged the state government to take up the project and implement it within five years, Bommai said the CM urged to execute both rehabilitation and resettlement works simultaneously.
