New Delhi: The Supreme Court will examine the tapes containing phone calls made from and to corporate lobbyist Nira Radia for suspected criminality. In its previous hearing, the Supreme Court stated that conversations will be picked at random from any of the 48 envelopes containing the transcripts of over 5,000 calls. The CBI will probe the matter if the court finds any criminality in the conversations.

Excerpts from the tapes earlier leaked in the media had sparked a political storm with the conversations bringing out the nature of corporate lobbying and also its purported impact on politics.

The court took on record the transcripts of entire tapped conversations which have been put in 38 sealed envelopes in addition to the 10 already placed before it earlier. "We will go through the envelopes (containing the transcripts) to decide what course of action can be taken," a Bench of Justice GS Singhvi and Justice SJ Mukhopadhaya said.

The bench said it would go through the transcripts to decide whether it had to be evaluated by an independent team.
