James Gunn expressed his admiration for the VFX team’s dedication. He emphasised how they played a crucial role in bringing the fantastical elements of his films to life.

The 2024 Oscar nominations were announced on January 23, with the Academy revealing its contenders for the Best Visual Effects category. Among the noteworthy entries was the American filmmaker, James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The director made a surprising revelation on Instagram, sharing that “nearly all” of the Oscar-nominated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 VFX crew would be returning for his next project—DC’s Superman: Legacy.

The visionary director behind the Guardians trilogy, took to Instagram to express his gratitude and congratulate the individuals who brought the film’s visual effects to life.

The spotlight shone on the production visual effects supervisor and three-time nominee, Stephane Ceretti, along with the four-time nominee Guy Williams and the first-time nominee Theo Bialek. Gunn acknowledged their relentless efforts in creating photorealistic characters and awe-inspiring worlds, singling out characters like Lylla, Teefs, Floor, Rocket, and Groot.

Gunn expressed his admiration for the VFX team’s dedication, emphasizing how they played a crucial role in bringing the fantastical elements of his films to life.

“Our VFX crew worked tirelessly from top to bottom to create photorealistic characters and outrageous worlds,” Gunn stated. “But I’m so happy they have this honour as well.”

The recognition didn’t stop with the Oscars; Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 also earned a Best Visual Effects nomination at the Critics’ Choice Awards, though the award ultimately went to Oppenheimer. Additionally, the film is in the running for Outstanding Achievement for Character Animation in a Live-Action Production at the upcoming Annie Awards.

One standout sequence in the film that has garnered widespread acclaim is known as The Hallway Fight. According to Comic Book, this particular scene, executed with precision by the team at Wētā FX under the supervision of Guy Williams, has become a focal point for those advocating for the film’s success. Williams shared insights into the meticulous planning behind the sequence, revealing that it comprised 18 shots shot over three days, involving intricate stunt choreography.

“There’s a lot of stunt choreography going on here. Stephane Cerretti is the VFX supervisor who oversaw this for Marvel, and he worked with all those teams to figure out how they were going to shoot it,” Williams explained to Comic Book.

Williams also detailed the strategic use of cuts during major character movements, providing a seamless flow to the scene. He emphasised the collaborative effort involved in bringing such intricate sequences to life, showcasing the dedication and skill of the VFX team.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 marks the conclusion of James Gunn’s Guardians trilogy, offering fans a thrilling blend of action, humour and cosmic adventure. The film shifts its focus from Peter Quill to the origin story of Rocket, voiced by Bradley Cooper. As the intergalactic former mercenaries face a new villain, the High Evolutionary, portrayed by Chukwudi Iwuji, the stakes are higher than ever.
