Karan Johar’s directorial Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani became an instant hit among fans when it was released earlier this year. Starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, this film entertained audiences worldwide, grossing over Rs 300 crore at the box office. Soon after the film’s release, Karan Johar hinted that the story was inspired by Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna’s relationship. However, the director has now refuted this claim.
Karan recently attended the launch event of Twinkle’s new book, Welcome to Paradise. During a fun exchange between the old friends, Twinkle said, “You based Rocky Aur Rani on my marriage, apparently. That’s what everyone is saying. Is that true? How much can you leech off me?”
To this, Karan replied, “No, it was just two people from different schools of thought coming together. That doesn’t mean it’s your marriage, Tina. Everything is not about you.” When Twinkle said that Karan himself had mentioned this in an interview, the filmmaker replied, “Don’t believe everything I say.”
Earlier, Karan had told Mid-Day, “Maybe subconsciously (I got inspired). They (Akshay and Twinkle) have a tremendous friendship in their marriage. I’ve had dinners with them, meals with them, and hung out with them. And there’s a terrific kind of comfort in their camaraderie. He finds her hilarious, and she finds him hilarious, for different reasons. So I felt it wasn’t impossible for people who come from two different demographics of society, two strata, to actually find love. It’s like we put ourselves in boxes. Like when we’re finding a relationship, we put ourselves in places where we’re comfortable. But tomorrow, you can fall in love with someone anywhere.”
“Rocky is definitely inspired by somebody who I can’t reveal right now. Rani is like many people I have met. In fact, a member of the media that I knew very well and dressed a lot like the way Rani does,” Karan had mentioned in one of his Instagram lives prior to the release of the film.
