Several places in India are faced with the problem of stray cattle. Often, when cows and bulls outgrow their utility, they are abandoned. As a result, the distressed cattle venture into markets and residential areas which sometimes results in man-cattle conflict.
In one such instance, a video, reportedly taken in Uttarakhand’s Naukuchiatal, shows a bull standing at the doorway of a shop or a cafe. A woman tries to leave the room, moving past the bull. The animal charges at her. Luckily, the woman doesn’t get hurt by the bull’s horns.
Reportedly the bull took shelter in the shop to escape rain and perhaps deemed the woman as a threat. The person who shared this video on X mentioned the woman was the cafe’s manager.
The video was captioned, “About last evening in Naukuchiatal in Uttarakhand. A bull taking shelter in a cafe charged at the manager trying to clear the entrance. Fortunately, she escaped unhurt. Stray cattle are a menace everywhere.” This video has gathered over one lakh views since it was shared on June 2.

An X user commented, “I love cows and have two at home but we need to fix the issue. I almost had two accidents last week due to cows suddenly starting running and changing direction. Applying hard brakes in the rainy season will cause skidding on my scooty so it has become more dangerous in this season.”

Expressing a similar sentiment, another person wrote, “It’s a big menace on the roads while travelling at night. I have witnessed multiple accidents which have even resulted in loss of life. We should ban milk production in India if we cannot control the cattle menace.”

Stray cattle are a growing problem in India. As per the 2020 livestock census, India had over 5 million stray cattle. They are responsible for causing accidents, crop damage, and in rare cases even spreading diseases. The state should build gaushalas and other shelter zones for stray cattle.
