GULBARGA: In a shocking incident, 180 infant deaths out of 583 due to Asphyxia [severe deficiency of oxygen] from April to September, has come to light in Gulbarga district.According to officials, figures available with the Express, a total of 583 infants died in Gulbarga district from April to September 2011. Of them 180 infants have been reported dead due to Asphyxia followed by 95 deaths due to low weight birth, 57 deaths due to Sepsis [severe illness in which bloodstream is overwhelmed by bacteria], 37 deaths due to premature delivery, 32 due to heart diseases, 30 deaths due to pneumonia, 11 deaths due to jaundice, two deaths due to diarrhoea, one death due to TB and 138 deaths due to other reasons. A total of 325 babies were born dead. Highest number of infant deaths have taken place in the month of May with infant deaths of 112 followed by June-106, July-99, August-95, September- 93 and April-78. Gulbarga [urban] has recorded the highest number of infant deaths with 336 deaths in the period between April and September, followed by 44 in Chincholi, 42 in Sedam, 39 in Aland, 37 in Jewargi, 32 in Afzalpur, 30 in Chittapur and 23 in Gulbarga [Rural]. A total of 43 maternal deaths have taken place in Gulbarga district in the same period. Eight maternal deaths have been reported, seven deaths each in the months of May, June and July and six maternal deaths were reported in the month of August. Of the 43 maternal deaths in the last six months, 12 maternal deaths have been reported in Gulbarga [urban], seven deaths were reported in Chincholi taluk, six deaths each in Afzalpur and Chittapur taluk, four deaths each in Aland and Gulbarga [rural] taluks, three deaths in Sedam taluk and one maternal death has been reported in Jewargi taluk. Sources in the Health Department have said that the infant death state average is 48 deaths per 1,000 infant deaths while the numbers are 21 infant deaths in Gulbarga district and the state average of maternal is 178 per one lakh deaths while it is 159 in Gulbarga.
