Madurai: Congress in Tamil Nadu has claimed credit for the release of the 23 fishermen by a court in Sri Lanka on Saturday.

The fishermen were arrested by Sri Lankan Navy on July 22 when they were fishing near Katchatheevu in the Palk Straits.

TNCC President BS Gnana Desikan claimed that the party was responsible for the release of the fishermen.

Addressing the 110th Kamaraj Birth anniversary meeting organised by the party here last night, he said Congress was not "tom toming" its role in the fishermen's release.

He said the state Congress would fight for Tamil Nadu's rights on the Mullaiperiyar dam issue.

He said Congress was out of power for a long time in Tamil Nadu as it had not taken the right decisions at the right time. "If the high command does this, Congress can form A government in this state"he said.

Congress leader EVKS Elangovan said Kamaraj was a statesman who foresaw the needs of the state. It was he who had pressed for setting up an Atomic Power Plant at Koodankulam when Jawaharlal Nehru was in power.

Former TNCC president KV Thangkabalu said Kamaraj rule would blossom in tamil Nadu.

Another former party president Krishnaswamy stressed the need for unity in the party to capture power in the state.
