KOCHI: Expressing concern over the NCRB report on increasing crime rate in the city, women’s organisations blame the respective authorities for not taking effective steps to curb atrocities against women.Stating it to be an alarming situation, All-India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) state secretary K K Shailaja said the police were not taking any tangible steps to deal with crimes, especially those against girls and women. “The police have to be more vigilant in curtailing such atrocities,” she said.It is not new that Kochi is a centre of criminal activities, Shailaja said and added that there was always an increase of crime against women in developing cities. She said a special team should be constituted to deal with crimes, especially crimes against women.“Special teams should have to be constituted not only for Kochi but for every city. It is not that Kochi is not the only city where criminal activities are on the rise. In almost all the cities, the crimes against women are on the  rise,” she said. Most of the sex scandals have its origin in the suburbs of Kochi such as Paravoor, Vypeen and Kothamangalam, she said. There is a need for the speedy disposal of all cases related to women. The cases should be registered in such a way that those involved in such activities do not get any loopholes to escape, she opined.National Federation of Indian Women state secretary Kamala Sadanandan said crimes against women were on the rise as the criminals were escaping from the clutches of law. “Most of the time the cases against women end with the filing of the FIR,” she said.Stating that crimes against women would come to end only if those indulged in such crimes were punished, Kamala Sadanandan said most of the cases even did not reach the courts.”The influential persons just make sure that the caseswere even not filed,” she said.All-India Federation of Women Lawyers vice-president V P Seemandini said the degradation of the new generation was a major cause of increasing crime in society, especially crime against women. Moreover, the girls of today have become more daring, she said.
