Baroda univ students rally behind dean, profs
The students want to boycott classes if action is taken against any of the professors now.

New Delhi: The Maharaja Sayaji Rao University Syndicate in Baroda has issued showcause notices to five faculty members who supported Professor Shivaji Panikkar, the suspended dean of the Arts faculty.

Panikkar has been under fire from hardliners for backing two of his students who were accused of painting inflammatory pictures of Gods and Goddesses.

Panikkar was suspended by the University management on May 11, after he refused to close down an exhibition of these paintings. ABVP activists had ransacked the exhibition.

Meanwhile the students at the University continue to stand behind their suspended dean.

They had a meeting in the morning on Saturday and decided to boycott classes if action is taken against any professor or Panikkar.

The controversial exhibition held in May this year was not open to public and was for evaluation purposes only.

However, Sangh Parivar activists stormed the exhibition, saying the paintings offended religious sentiments.

The attack on artistic expression was later condemned as an attempt by communal forces to stifle freedom of expression.

Panikkar was the acting Dean of the university's Arts faculty then.

What's your reaction?
